Akron A&P Lab Coordinator Evolves from Custom Print to LabRight with Van-Griner Learning…
More than a decade ago, Human A&P Lab Coordinator Jeff Spencer from the University of Akron was using an off-the-shelf lab manual from a major publisher. But he had a different vision of what his labs could be and when he learned about how Van-Griner Learning would work with him to help make his vision a reality he was all in. Taking to the task with relish, he began gathering images for his Human A&P I and II lab manuals. Van-Griner Learning helped Jeff develop his vision including printing cardstock flashcards in the back of the manual for students to tear out and use for studying.
Lessons, Pre-Labs, and Class Activities
Jeff crafted labs that fit his lab environment and book-ended them with lessons, pre-labs and class activities. The manuals featured notes-taking sections and were printed on glossy paper to make the images pop. In a nutshell, Spencer created exactly the print resource that suited him and his classes at the time.
Taking It All Digital
Fast forward to spring 2020 and the Covid-19 pandemic. Jeff wanted to go digital for fall so Van-Griner Learning took his material and applied it to the LabRight A&P platform, again creating exactly the resource he desired. His platform is integrated into Brightspace so students access the platform through their LMS for a single-server sign-on. His flashcards transitioned online so students could still study from them by “turning them over” for the correct answer. He was also able to take advantage of the BioDigital 2D and 3D rotatable models available on LabRight A&P that nearly mimic students’ ability to manipulate a model in lab. These interactive images also allow students to zoom in and out, color, and hide features, making them a valuable learning and study tool. His pre-labs are automatically graded and according to Jeff’s wishes, students are allowed to re-answer pre-lab questions until they get them all correct. His class activities are graded for completion. Grades from turned-in assignments migrate instantly to the class gradebook. In fact, since the platform is already in the school LMS, where the gradebook is, student grades are never “out” of the LMS.
